College signings

Marmion's Cano and Stefanski sign with Division I Schools: Marmion Academy seniors Shane Cano of Plano and Peter Stefanski of Aurora have signed their Letter of Intent to compete at the Division-I level next year.

Cano, an All-State and All-American swimmer, has accepted an athletic scholarship to attend St. Louis University. He plans to study Aviation Flight Science. During his senior year, Cano was a team captain and qualified for the IHSA State Meet in the 200-yard medley relay, 100 backstroke, and 200-yard freestyle relay. He ranks in Marmion's top 5 in the 100 backstroke and was part of two relays that are in Marmion's top 20. He also received the Ben Graffagna Ideal Teammate Award.

Cano is excited to see what the future holds. 'I went from an average swimmer to a State qualifier and now a college athlete. I have Marmion and Coach (Bill) Schalz to thank for that.'

Stefanski will join the Miami University (Ohio) track and field team next year on an athletic scholarship. In 2011, he received all-conference and all-state honors, finishing 2nd at the IHSA outdoor meet.

Stefanski recently broke his own school record in high jump after clearing 6 feet, 10 inches at the Streamwood Sabre Invitation on April 21. He is now ranked third in the state and 11th in the nation. Earlier this year, he finished 3rd at the 2012 Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Meet and looks forward to another run for the state title in this spring's state meet.

Stefanski has not declared a major, but plans to focus on biological/environmental sciences.

Basketball

West Aurora to participate in Hoops Showdown: The Integrity Group confirmed the pairings for next season's 'High School Hoops Showdown'. The nationally known event, which has averaged close to 5,000 fans, returns to the Sears Centre Arena, in Hoffman Estates. The triple-header is set for Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013.

Game 1 (4:30 p.m. tip-off): The rivals matchup featuring two teams from the East Suburban Catholic Conference: Niles-Notre Dame (20-9) and St. Viator (25-4), the defending ESCC Champions.

In Game 2 (6:30 tip-off), it's the local matchup as Naperville Central takes on Lisle-Benet Academy.

Game 3 (8:30 tip-off) matches two of the most storied programs in the state, and two Hall of Fame coaches, as Westchester-St. Joseph (20-9) and Gene Pingatore, clash with West Aurora (25-6) and Gordie Kerkman. These teams, which haven't met since the 1984 AA State Tournament (West won 55-54, to finish 3rd), will return the bulk of their starters and should be highly rated. The Chargers will be led by A.J. Patty (Sr., PF), and the 'Blackhawks' by Jontrel Walker (Jr., PG).

This year's tripleheader included great teams (four of the top-5 in the Daily Herald rankings). In Game 1, Elgin defeated Huntley, 58-44. In the rivals game Geneva got past old nemesis Batavia 48-38. In the finale, Warren slipped past Downers South 64-63 in OT.
