TITLE: APPLAUSE - The Beacon News - Aurora (IL)

Somonauk Spring awards given Somonauk High School recently hosted its annual Spring Awards ceremony. This event recognizes the accomplishments of the students in academics, activities and athletics.The following scholarships and awards were given:

Jeremiah Potter Memorial Scholarship, DeKalb County Farm Bureau Scholarship and John Philips Sousa Award -- Jim Bilek.

Sandwich Rotary Scholarship -- Rachael Abens.

Somonauk Education Association Scholarship and Louis Armstrong Award -- Phil Ash.

Charlene Johnston Memorial S.E.B. Scholarship for Illinois State Scholar, North Central College Presidential Scholarship, Junior Women's Club Service to Mankind Award and D.A.R. Award -- Jody Jackson.

Charlene Johnston Memorial S.E.B. Leadership Scholarship -- Erica Cox.

Melissa Ackerman Child Safety Scholarship -- Sarah Butcher.

Waubonsee Community College Lucille Gustafson Scholarship -- Diandra Ward and Mandi Wasson.

Illinois Student Assistance Commission Merit Recognition Scholarship -- Jody Jackson and Shawn Davis.

Somonauk Alumni Association Scholarship -- Melissa Miller.

Somonauk Lions Club Scholarship -- Christina Wiley.

Somonauk Junior Women's Club Peggy Clapper Memorial Scholarship, Presidential Education Fitness Award, U.S. Marines Scholastic Excellence Award and S.A.R. Award -- Shawn Davis.

American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Award -- Sarah Zuege.

American Legion Boys State Award -- Matt Coultrip.

Junior Women's Club Girls State Award -- Stephanie Hartwig.

American Legion Essay Contest Awards -- 1st place local and 2nd place district Jenny Youngmark; 2nd place local Pam Gamble; Honorable Mention Becky Heiden.

Army Reserve Scholar Athlete Award -- Erica Cox and Erik Goldman.

Army National Guard Award -- Marc Turner, Jason Perkunas, Kurt Roth, Josh Riffell.

Illinois State Scholars -- Jim Bilek, Jody Jackson, Shawn Davis.

Bausch and Lomb Science Award -- Mike Short.

Business Awards -- Mandi Wasson, Dani Gonigam, Shawn Davis, Jennifer Youngmark, Drew Turner.

Coca Cola Scholar Athletes Award and Somonauk High School Senior Athletes Award -- Erica Cox and Erik Goldman.

Recognition was also given to students for their involvement in the school's organizations.

The Academic Challenge Team was honored for taking third place in district competition.

Math League certificates were given to 28 students, and special math excellence recognition was given to Kristine Carpenter, Byron Knudsen and Mike Short.

Drew Turner and Shawn Davis were awarded certificates from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Certificates of Appreciation were given to the students who helped throughout the year in the Library Media Center.

The Little 10 Academic Bowl Champion team from Somonauk was recognized for its winning season with special mention going to Jim Bilek and Shawn Davis.

The Student Council members were honored for their work on behalf of the students, and Shawn Davis was recognized as president of the council this past year.

Certificates and pins were given to members of the yearbook staff and the Bobcat Beat staff; special mention was made of Angie Rausch and Mandi Wasson, co-editors of the yearbook.

Twenty-six Charter members of the Fine Arts Club were recognized for their work organizing Somonauk's first Fine Arts Festival.

Winning technology awards for their web sites were Brian Kroening, John Morton, and Ethan Griffin.

For having perfect attendance this year, Tim Dawe, Nathan White, Dennis Colemen, Ryan White and Matt Coultrip were honored.

Awards were given to the athletes in spring sports.

Special mention being made of Melissa Gamble and Melissa Paulson for setting track records this season.

The Frosh-Soph and Varsity softball players received certificates and/or letters.

During the softball recognition, Jackie Morphey was awarded the MVP, Angie Rausch received MIP, Erica Cox was named Best Defense, All-Conference and Academic All-Conference, Diandra Ward and Jodi Stahl received Academic All-Conference.

Chris Wilson, Billy Thayer, Jeremy Moss, Jeremy Dvorak and Josh Sarver were five members of the Frosh-Soph baseball team who were present to receive awards.

The Varsity baseball team arrived in uniform at the ceremony following a win in its first regional game.

Special mention was made of Chad Grandgeorge for All-Conference Team and MVP, Joel Britt for All-Conference Team and Academic All-Conference, Chris Dvorak for All-Conference Team, and Erik Goldman for Academic All-Conference.

Yorkville The United States Achievement Academy announced Adam Unterbrunner from Yorkville has been named a United States National Award Winner in Science.

He attends Yorkville High School and was nominated for the award by his biology teacher.

He is the son of Lynn and Mary Unterbrunner of Yorkville.

Plano The United States Achievement Academy announced Angela Tripp from Plano has been named an All-American Scholar.

Angela attends Plano High School and is the daughter of Mike and Tina Tripp of Plano.

Aurora AU presents student awards Seniors Heather Fairbanks of Aurora and Joshua Todd of Chicago received the highest student awards presented annually by Aurora University at the All University Awards Ceremony.

Both Fairbanks and Todd received the Spartan Award, which recognizes a graduating seniors for the willingness to sacrifice for the interests of the group.

Fairbanks was a member of Future Educators of America, president of Omicron Delta Kappa, a member of the dance team, cheerleading squad and Latin American Students Organization (LASO), a cast member of the production Do Black Parent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?, served as a peer mentor and tutor, appeared in Who's Who for both 1996 and 1997, organized the Angel Tree Project on campus and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a grade point average of 3.82.

Todd was active in many student associations, including AUSA, GLOBAL, the Political Science Club and Activities Programming Board.

He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a grade point average of 3.87.
